About This Database
Since its inception in 2019, the Somali Journalists Syndicate (SJS) has been dedicated to monitoring and documenting violations against media freedom in Somalia and Somaliland. Initially conducted manually, this monitoring and documentation effort underwent a transformative shift in 2023. With the invaluable support provided by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), SJS established the first-ever database dedicated to documenting violations against media freedom in the region.
Our team diligently conducts systematic monitoring, documentation, and verification of cases throughout the year. Incidents are categorized into various forms of violations, including but not limited to killings, kidnappings, enforced disappearances, arbitrary detentions, torture and physical assaults, hate speech, restrictions on access to information, civil and criminal proceedings, internet restrictions, media closures and blockages, as well as intimidations and threats.
Following comprehensive documentation, the data is analyzed, contributing to SJS's advocacy reporting on the state of media freedom in Somalia and Somaliland. If you have any question, please contact us at: email: sjs@sjsyndicate.org .
